Spring Kids Crafts – Coffee Filter Butterflies
Spring is finally here! We’re so happy to see the flowers blooming, and to be able to spend more time outside. Our favorite book to read this time of year is The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle.
Coffee filter butterflies are a fun and easy craft to do with your preschooler after reading this classic book. You can use markers or non-toxic paint to color your filter. Our favorite method is using dot markers from fireflies and mudpies:
Coffee Filter Butterflies
Supplies needed:
- Dot markers
- Coffee filters
- Pipe cleaners
- Wooden clothespins
- Plastic spray bottle filled with water
- Tacky craft glue (optional)
Step 1. Smooth a coffee filter over a plate, pie pan, or newspaper. Dab the coffee filter with a range of colorful dot markers.
Step 2. Spray water all over the filters. You can do this inside, or take a trip outside. Let the coffee filters dry completely.
Step 3. When the coffee filter is dry, scrunch the middle of it into a butterfly shape and secure with a clothespin. Cut a small length of pipe cleaner, then fold it into a V shape to make an antennae. Slide the pipe cleaner into the clothespin, or use a small dot of tacky craft glue.
Easy, right? Hang these in your window for some color on sunny days. If you make this craft with your preschooler, share it with us on Facebook!
